Leadership & development
I help engineers set priorities, talk through tradeoffs, and take ownership of their work. When a process is getting in the way, I try to fix the process.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
I’m Billy, an IT Software Engineering Team Lead at Vermeer. I spend most of my time helping engineers work through hard problems, make sound decisions, and ship software that does what people need.
01 / About
I like technical work best when it starts with the people who will use it and the engineers who have to maintain it.
I work remotely from Grand Rapids, Michigan, leading an IT software engineering team at Vermeer. Over the years I’ve worked on microcontrollers, Linux systems, web applications, and enterprise software. That range helps me ask better questions when a problem crosses team or technology boundaries.
I’ve also taught as an adjunct instructor in Grand Valley State University’s engineering department. I especially enjoyed the moment when a difficult concept finally made sense to a student. Today, I serve on the City of Grand Rapids’ West Side Corridor Improvement Authority board, where I bring the perspective of a resident, engineer, and regular customer of West Side businesses.
02 / Experience
I help engineers set priorities, talk through tradeoffs, and take ownership of their work. When a process is getting in the way, I try to fix the process.
I’ve worked close to the hardware and across the application stack, from microcontrollers and Linux to web and enterprise systems.
I enjoy explaining technical ideas, mentoring engineers, and putting those skills to work for the West Side.
03 / Community
Volunteer website help for local nonprofits and community groups
I volunteer some of my time to build or improve websites for nonprofits and community organizations.
If your organization needs its first website, a better way to publish resources, or help fixing an existing site, send me a note. We can talk about what you actually need and whether I’m a good fit.
